English & Work Placement

Brand-new course for students who wish to work and study in order to improve their language skills and gain valuable work experience! Students can also work towards the qualification ‘Cambridge Certificate in Work Experience’.
The Manchester Central School of English is proud to present our new sandwich course:

Aims and Objectives

Improve your English language skills and develop real-life working skills in paid placements!*
Timetable: 15 hours of General English (Monday – Friday in the mornings) plus 5 hours in the afternoons (2.5 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday) of skills and vocabulary necessary to the working environment.
Placement: 30+ working hours per week (days, evenings, weekends)
* Not all placements are paid

Work Placement

  • In the ‘hospitality’ sector: hotels, restaurants.
  • Located in rural areas (not cities), anywhere in England.
  • Paid placements – students will receive at least the national minimum wage
  • Accommodation provided by the employer.
  • 30+ hours per week of work on average
  • Some experience in a similar environment is necessary.
  • Students must be of an Intermediate English level.
  • Students can achieve the Cambridge Certificate in Work Experience – an internationally recognised certificate.

Internships

  • In the ‘professional’ sector – students can choose a field in which they have professional experience – accounting, design, marketing, IT and sales are just a few options.
  • More likely to be based in city locations in the North of England.
  • The work is likely to be unpaid, but it will be a fantastic and valuable experience.
  • Students must provide their own accommodation during the placement.
  • Students must be of an Upper Intermediate English level.
  • Students can achieve the Cambridge Certificate in Work Experience – an internationally recognised certificate.

Cambridge Certificate in Work Experience

The achievement of this certificate will demonstrate your skills and abilities in the work place. It provides an internationally recognized qualification of your employability.

  1. Learn English in a real working environment
  2. Gain knowledge of UK working practices (e.g. Health & Safety)
  3. Develop communication skills in the workplace
  4. Improve your customer service abilities
  5. Enhance your organization skills
  6. Gain valuable practical experience which will look good on your CV (resume)

General English Intensive (20 hours per week)

  • Available all year
  • Start any Monday
  • Small groups (Minimum of 3 students required)
  • Minimum age is 18 years old
  • All levels

Outline of Syllabus – Morning classes

  • Communication Skills practice for correct pronunciation
  • Vocabulary work and spelling guidelines
  • Listening activities based on real-life situations
  • Reading tasks to aid understanding of English language
  • Writing exercises aimed at improving accuracy
  • Studying English grammar points relevant to the level of your course

Outline of Syllabus – Afternoon classes

  1. Concentrates on everyday English language
  2. Develop vocabulary and skills relevant to your work placement
  3. Discussion work to improve speaking and interaction skills

Work Placements – accommodation will be provided, for a nominal charge, onsite or nearby.
Internships – students must find their own accommodation.
